why is my fish tank water cloudy? ?

i have an oscar. i have a pump to filter the water and keep it moving.i clean the tank twice a week. it’s a 40 gallon tank and i take 5 gallons out 2 times per week. i have had the amnonia/nitrite/nitriate levels tested and everyting tests clear. my fish has been having labored breathing but i can see the bubles being pushed down into the water. she doesn’t appear to physically have anything worng with her. i feed her 10 gold fish or rosies 1 timer per month. she eats one time per day. only as much as she can consume in a couple minutes.shortly after i fed her the rosies the water clouded up really bad. that’s when all these problems started happening. now she won’t eat her pebble food at all. i’ve feed her live fish before and she would still eat regular fish food afterwards. the pet store can’t explaing the cloudyness in the water, what could be causing cloudy water other than high levels? And what could be making her loose her appitiate?

Honestly, your tank is too small. I dont know how the petstore didnt know that. Thats why your tank is cloudy. Oscars need 75 gallons on water for one fish. A healthy oscar will grow 1-1.5 inches every month in the first year of their life.

Oscars produce lots of waste. Simple. You dont want to change the water too often because it puts a lot of stress on the fish. Its also bad to change too much at once. Your filter needs to be rated twice the size of your tank. So if you have a 40 gallon tank, youll need at least a 75 gallon filter (I only said 75 because it was the closest standard size).

Avoid feeders like the plague. Feeder fish bought from petstores are about the worst thing you can do to your fish. Feeders are kept in horribly cramped conditions and bred on massive scales. There are alot of diseases and parasites living with and living on the feeders. So, for future reference, only feed him feeders if you breed them yourself. That way, you know that they are healthy.

Losing appetite actually sounds like it could be a parasite caused from the feeders. Thats my opinion though. Your oscar is obviously sick. It could also be the end of his life because when you keep fish in tanks too small for them, they become stunted. Their body stops growing (not all fish do this, some fish will actually grow until they cant move and die) but their organs dont. So the it takes years off of their life. Stunted fish always die short of what they should live. They usually die less than half of the span they were supposed to live (look at all those people who kept goldfish in small tanks and think goldfish only live a few months to a year. They actually live 15-20 years). Oscars should live 10 years easy, I dont know their approximate lifespan, but a fish like that should live at least 10 years. So if your oscar is about 2-4 years old, he might be going out.

Treat for internal parasites because thats honestly what I think it is. Stop feeding him feeders. Keep him on pellets and frozen foods. If you breed your own fish, then you can safely feed those to him though. Get him at least a 75 gallon tank. And a filter thats rated for 150 gallons. You can get into the canister filters here, and those things are freaking great.
