I rescued a bird against RSPCA’s recommendation.?
My neighbour had a huge tree taken down, and with it came a small wood pigeon not able to fly, too big to just leave to the cats to eat. I called the RSPCA and they said leave it alone and it will be fine. I finally managed to find a wildlife rescue centre to take it. If I had left it my cats would have eaten it if not the locals, And this is a Wood Pigeon, not a sky rat that plagues our cities. I know they have important issues to deal with but surely they could have advised me to take it in or do what i did and search for a welcoming wildlife centre to have it. Why are they dismissing cases like these?
Difficult one to answer.
The RSPCA are inundated with people finding young “deserted” birds every year, which are actually nothing of the sort, and perfectly okay, but just not in a good situation.
That said, it does not stop them giving you good advice especially considering the the situation you describe, which I assume you told them too.
I had a similar experience, where on a main road, 6 shellduck chicks were walking down the miiddle, 2 got run over while I was watching, so my gf and I, got out, slowed traffic and got them running off downa farm track. Which at the end was a cat. I was quite happy to have left them onthe track, but with the cat, no chance, so agonised for a while and decided to remove them.
So, take them home, call RSPCA, they say “go put them back where you found them”. I explain again the cirmcumstances, same reply. So I ask if they want me to put them striaght under a lorry, or give them directly to the cat.

They ask me to wait, a 2 mins later was told a collection would be made the next day! )
On the flip side to this, I had run out of room for young hedgehogs. Had a little one, weighing in at 8 oz. Called the RSPCA, and they said they would get someone to contact me.
I received maybe 4 or 5 calls of people wanting to take it off my hands.
So go figure.. what did I do that was so different to get two totally different responses?
